Soccer Language

In the sport of soccer there is specific language used which every player and viewer should be aware of. The following are a few of the soccer terms you will hear.



Added Time: A soccer game is played in two halves, each 45 minutes long. Added time means time that has been added to the clock due to time lost for injuries, substitutions, etc.



Advantage: This is a judgment call by the referee to allow play to continue despite witnessing an act of foul play.



AR: An AR is an assistant referee. The assistant referee will communicate with the referee by means of flag signals.



Caution: When a player or substitute player’s conduct during the soccer games become unacceptable the referee will give a formal warning which is called a caution.



Attacker: The attacker is the team who is in possession of the soccer ball or a player on the opposing half of the field.



Club Linesman: In the game of soccer an assistant referee is neutral and is positioned on the sidelines. A club linesman is non-neutral and an official that is used to take the assistant coach’s place when he is absent.



Coach: The coach is the instruction behind the soccer team. He is allowed on the sidelines and is able to pass tactical advice to his players.
